Thank you for consulting Historic Environment about the above pre-application enquiry for the decommissioning of an existing below ground fuel tank, and construction of an above ground fuel tank at Mayflower Marina. The site is not within the Devonport Conservation Area nor does it physically impact a designated listed building or scheduled ancient monument. As such the decommissioning of the existing below ground tank is of no concern. It is difficult to asses without additional information on the size of the replacement above ground tank, however presumably it will be large enough to result in a minor degree of visual harm to the setting of the Conservation Area and possibly the grade II listed Old Gun Wharf Wall (NHL - 1430125). Visual could be mitigated through screening subject to the size of the tank. Within reason we would accept that as a functioning marina and quay, industrial elements would not be out of keeping with the established use of the area.
Presumably there will be no below ground earthworks below the modern concrete surfaces and piled quay, we would welcome confirmation of this. In the event that any excavation is required below the concrete piled quay into the inter-tidal zone an historic foreshore we may need to suggest possible archaeological conditions to mitigate the development.
